Pan-European Research and Education Network Consortium GEANT: Features of Infrastructure, Key Projects and Services

This review paper is dedicated to the world's largest telecommunication consortium GEANT (Gigabit European Academic Network Technology), which is the pan-European high-speed data transfer network operated and developed in the needs of the research and education sphere. General information about current status of National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) developing around the world and Federal university computer network of Russia RUNNet (Russian UNiversity Network) is given. The main principles of functioning, the features of the terabit-ready backbone infrastructure, global, regional and intercontinental network connectivity of the GEANT are considered. The innovative GEANT network technology which is built on two layers (transmission and packet) is presented and discussed in brief. Some quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the network, GEANT topology and connectivity maps are given. The main tasks are being performed by consortium in order to support and manage global research projects in priority scientific areas and regional telecommunications initiatives (such as RedCLARA, AfricaConnect, Asi@Connect, EaPConnect, CAREN) are mentioned and discussed. The information about the network and collaboration services developed by consortium in cooperation with local NRENs is provided. Among these services are connectivity and network management services, trust, identity and security services, the wide range of cloud services, real-time communications services, etc. The current state and potentially directions in-demand of the cooperation between the RUNNet network and the consortium GEANT are considered.
